The Gentle Malays
Transcript:
The Malays are a gentle people.
We are taught to honour our guests,
To speak softly, to be kind.
To treat others better than how we want to be treated.
To accept, to protect and promote others.
It is a culture rooted in budi.
In respect.
In generosity.
In dignity.
And history shows this clearly.
When the Indians migrated, they were welcomed.
When the Chinese arrived, they were given space to live, to trade, to flourish.
When the Arabs came, they were not just accepted… they became family.
They were brought into the Malay world… into the adat… into the community.
Some became ulama. Some became sultans.
We welcome.
We embrace.
We protect.
But do not mistake our gentleness for servitude.
And do not take for granted the kindness of a people whose dignity is part of their soul.
Because when that dignity is trampled…
They will rise.
And they do not forget.
