Declaring Allah's Commands As Madness
Transcript:
“These demands included one adopting Islamic economics by changing the financial system to a non-interest based model… Some of his demands were absurd. I would say very damaging. For example, his demand that we change our financial system to be more Islamic. The financial industry contributes to 14% of our GDP. It employs nearly 200,000 people. It is vital to our economy. This man who is based in Malaysia wants to stop all of that. It is madness”.
Madness, he said.
To stop using interest as part of our financial system is madness.
I do not know the full details of Ustaz Noor’s proposal.
But I assume he did not mean to dismantle the system overnight.
It would make sense to progressively move toward a non-interest-based model. To study it, plan it, and explore how such a system could exist within and drive Singapura’s economy.
For Muslims, riba (usury or interest) is among the gravest sins.
It makes sense for a Muslim scholar or leader to raise this issue.
It makes sense for Muslims to advocate socially, politically and economically for a system that aligns with our beliefs.
I do not expect Shanmugam to agree with the proposal.
But what shocked me, what offends me, is his response:
“…adopting Islamic economics by changing the financial system to a non-interest based model… it is madness.”
He declared the very idea of moving away from interest-based finance as “madness”.
Madness.
He called what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden as madness.
If this came from a banker defending his profits, it would not surprise me.
But this was a Minister of Government, standing in Parliament, dismissing a core command of Islam as mad.
This is the arrogance of the PAP.
This is the arrogance of Shanmugam.
They know they can insult Islam and no one will challenge them.
They know they can declare Allah’s prohibitions as madness and there will be silence from Muslims.
Not one Muslim in government
Not one MUIS staff.
Not one community leader will speak.
Belittle Allah’s command, declare the Prophet’s instruction as madness and no Muslim leader would defend their deen, their Prophet, their God’s words.
And Shanmugam knows this.

The PAP seems to lost touch with reality. Insulting another person beliefs is purely arrogance. He is more like a banker rather than Members of Parliament. He is not fit to be an MP, he is a disgrace to civilisation. He could have at least research the subject and understand the implications before making such statements in Parliament. Where are the voices of Islamic Scholars,MUIS? Oh yes they are just part of PAP
