Assimilation and Moving Away from Islam
Transcript:
How did the PAP get some Singapura Malay leaders to become more Chinese and move away from Islam? How did they get these Malay leaders to support the banning of the hijab?
Given that the PAP is essentially a Chinese supremacist party, the process of Malay suppression involved several steps.
First, they banned Malay youths from National Service without telling them. Remember that Malays saw the military as a major source of the community’s economic progression. By banning Malays from their traditional work, the PAP cut off their economic growth.
After they destroyed the Malay economy, the PAP accused Malays of being genetically and culturally deficient. They somehow blamed the Malays' drop in economic position not on their policies but on the Malays themselves.
They then had Malay MPs parrotting the PAP talking point that Malays were to blame, not their party.
The PAP then promoted Speak Mandarin nationwide while pretending that it was only targeted to the Chinese community.
It became so widely promoted that Malays and Indians are expected to speak Chinese for jobs that did not require the language.
This led not to an expectation that the Malays assimilate (not simply integrate) into the Chinese community.
As admitted by the former MUIS Secretary Syed Haroon Aljunied, “When asked (by academic Michael Barr) if he thought ‘assimilation’ was necessary for the Malays to gain a higher representation in the civil service, he replied ‘Yeah that’s right. Then they don’t see any difference.’”
The project is not for the different races to integrate. It is for Malays to assimilate.
And for Lee Kuan Yew, the barrier to integration is Islam.
“The generation that worked with me: Osman Wok, Rahim Ishak that was before the wave came sweeping back, sweeping them. That generation integrated well. We drank beer, we went canvassing, we went electioneering, we eat together.”
“So what do they need to go to integrate?”“Being less strict on Islamic observances and say “Okay, I’ll eat with you,”
